Thursday, March 26

Friday, March 27

  • 9:15-11:30 One-on-one rolling sessions with Helen, Alison, Ed, Renee and Fern

Standard TRAQS

  • 1:00-4:00 Registration
  • 1:15-2:15 One-on-one rolling sessions (Extended participants only)
  • 1:15-2:00 Introduction to Traditional Qajaqing (Fern)
  • 2:00-4:00 Taming your Qajaq with a Greenland paddle (Pete Hohmann)
    • This intermediate class will be a fusion of FreeStyle canoe techniques and Greenland paddling.  Learn to precision maneuver your kayak using your Greenland paddle. We will start with the basics like forward and reverse sweep strokes, and then progress to Stern rudders combined with edging, Bow and cross bow rudders, Cross bow pry, Side slipping with hanging draws and prys, Moving sideways with sculling draw and sculling pry, Sculling low and high brace, Low and high brace turns, and Blending strokes together efficiently. We will also learn about how wind direction affects stroke selection and the efficient use of a skeg for directional control.

  • 2:30-4:00 Mentoring the Mentors (Helen)
    • Helen will need assistance when working with the beginner rollers on Saturday morning.  She will share some fundamental mentoring ideas with folks willing to help mentor the beginners.  The great thing about assisting others is that you will develop a greater understanding of the Standard Greenland Roll which will naturally lead to improved layback rolls of all varieties.

  • 7:15-8:00 Qajaq Rolling Simplified (Helen)
    • These exercises are great for folks without a solid roll, or for those looking to expand their layback rolling skills, or for people working on their mentoring skills. She will cover the foundation moves for forward finishing rolls if time allows. 
  • 8:00-8:30 Ropes demonstration ( Sarah and Nate Apgar)
  • 8:30-10:00? Harpoon throwing contest 

Saturday, March 28

  • 7:00-7:45 Stretching for Paddling with Alison(Lakeside conference room)
  • 8:00-8:45 Breakfast
  • 9:00-11:30 Morning on-water session (All sessions are subject to change based on participants needs)
    • Beginning rolling (Helen/Fern/New Mentors)
    • Forward Stroke 1 (Greg): land based training and detailed discussion starting with proper paddle size, grip, leg drive, torso rotation stroke, crunch stroke, canted blade, how to extend the paddle safely for bracing.
    • Forward Strokes II- continuation of Strokes I on the water.(Greg)
    • Basic forward finishing rolls/Chest Scull/Reverse Sweep  (Alison)
    • Sculling basics/side scull (Ed)
