  • 4:00-5:30 Mentoring the Mentors
    • Cheri Perry is offering to  share some fundamental ideas with any mentor attending TRAQ’s. Join in the fun and add some tricks to your tool box. Working with beginner rollers can be tricky,  they are generally needy and time intensive.  Do you have questions about the best place to stand?  How to get a beginner working independently with another beginner? Give them “homework” so they can progress without you after their lesson.  How to best use your tools, (Avataq’s, different kayaks).  How to make the best use of “cockpit time” (the actual time that a client will spend working on their roll in the water). How to crack forward finishing rolls.  To qualify: please make yourself available for the Thursday evening land session (Kayak Rolling Simplified) as well as the Saturday Am beginner rolling segment (if you aren’t assigned elsewhere.)

  • 7:30-8:30 Qajaq Rolling Simplified (Cheri/Liz)
    • Cheri Perry will break down the ideal way to fit yourself into a greenland kayak, and why it is important.  This is an interactive segment.  Folks are encouraged to bring their kayaks into the circle and try others as well.  After the fitting discussion, Cheri will break down all of the key components of the Standard Greenland Roll, and folks will have time to practice the land exercises for this drill. These exercises are great for folks without a solid roll, or for those looking to expand their layback rolling skills, or for people working on their mentoring skills. Also if time allows and there is interest, she will cover the foundation moves and land exercises for forward finishing, as well as the storm roll.

  • 9-9:15 Freestyling with a Greenland Kayak (Pete)
    • Pete Hohmann will demonstrate how you can combine maneuvers and rolls to create a Freestyle routine to music. (Pete)
  • 9-11:30 The Where, Why and How of Greenland Paddling (Pete)
    • Pete will start with a brief beach talk on the history of the Greenland kayaking and why it is appropriate for today.  This will be followed by an on-the-water introduction to the Greenland forward stroke and maneuvering strokes.  This class is designed for beginners, but experienced Greenland paddlers are also welcome to come and help with the newer paddlers.
  • 9:15-11:30 One-on-one rolling sessions with Cheri/Bev, Liz, Ed and Dubside(Extended participants only)
  • 12:00-12:45 Lunch (Extended participants only)
  • 1:00-4:00 Registration (Standard weekend participants)
  • 1:00-4:00 Obedience training your Greenland kayak with a Skinny Stick, Part I (Pete)
    • This class will be about developing finesse with the Greenland paddle.  A buoy course will be set up to help fine-tune your maneuvering strokes, with an  emphasis on smoothly blending strokes.  This class is appropriate for any skill level.

    • Forward Stroke 1 (Renee): land based training and detailed discussion starting with proper paddle size, grip, leg drive, torso rotation stroke, crunch stroke, canted blade, how to extend the paddle safely for bracing.
    • Forward Strokes II- continuation of Strokes I on the water.(Renee)
    • Intermediate aft finishing rolls Shotgun/Norsaq/Hand (Dubside)
    • Basic forward finishing rolls/Chest Scull/Reverse Sweep  (Cheri/Ed)

        • Our initial focus will be on support strokes such as side sculls and braces, which will help you prevent a capsize.  We will then continue to fine-tune our maneuvering strokes on the buoy course.  This class is appropriate for anyone, even if you did not attend Part 1.
